Generalities of the Americas

History of the name “Americas”
America comes from the name of an italian navigator, Amerigo Vespucci. The first map of America was drawn by a german cartographer, Martin Waldsmeenüller.

Political division: North America
It is divided in 4 countries. Those countries are:


  • Canado (Ottawa)
  • United States (Washington D.C.)
  • Mexico (Mexico D.F.)
  • Greenland(Denmark)

Political division: South America
South America is divided in 12 different countries, the countries are:


  • Colombia (Bogota)
  • Ecuador (Quito)
  • Peru(Lima)
  • Bolivia (La Paz)
  • Chile (San Tiago)
  • Argentina (Buenos Aires)
  • Uruguay (Mnte. Video)
  • Paraguay (Asuncion)
  • Brazil (Brasilia)
  • Suinname (Paramaribo)
  • Guayana (Georgetown)
  • Venezuela (Caracas)

Political division: America Central
America Central is formed by:


  • Belice (Belmopan)
  • Guatemala (Guatemala City)
  • Honduras (Tegucigalpa)
  • El Salvador (San Salvador)
  • Nicaragua (Managua)
  • Costa Rica (San Jose)
  • Panama (Panama City)

Political division: Caribbean America
It is formed by 13 countries, that are:


  • Cuba (Havana)
  • Bahamas (Nassau)
  • Jamaica (Kingston)
  • Haitï (Port-au-Prince)
  • Dominican Republic (Santo Domingo)
  • Antigua and Barbuda (St. John's)
  • Dominica (Rosseau)
  • Barbados (Bridgetown)
  • Trinidad and Tobago (Port of Spain)
  • Grenada (St. George's)
  • St. Vincent and the Grenadines (Kingstown)
  • St. Lucia (Castries)
  • St. Kitts and Nevis (Basseterre)

Difference between America Central and Central America
The difference is that Central America are the 5 countries that belonged to the Capitania General de Guatemala (Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica), and America Central are the 7 countries that are located from the south of Mexico to north of Colombia (Central America + Belice and Panama).
